Paw Pads and Colorful Murals

Last month I had the great honor to create a series of murals at the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) and had very little time to not only get these murals completed, but to actually have a moment to blog this experience.

Shortly after the first of this year, I was approached our colleagues and Philanthropy partners at the HSSV to request my partnership with fellow artist Ron Burns to paint a series of original murals on the new animal habitat project within the new Milpitas facility. I met with Stephanie at the HSSV in January to view the space and received a tour of the new facility. Quite impressive, I was more amazed that this facility was *green* and compliant to the LEED parameters (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It turns out that the painted that needed to be used for these murals ALSO needed to be LEED compliant. Now, mind you, I did not know much about this previously and have learned an incredible amount in the process. So, being the research crazy person that I am, I got on the phone with the facility gurus at the HSSV as well as the local LEED certification specialists, I also connected them with the paint companies that I utilize for specifics on the composite of the paints and varnishes. The design was focused on the needs of the pets and overall animal care - what is best for the animals.

This mural project was not some off the cuff idea that just surfaced, it was planned, calculated and compliant.

As the day approached and all the press was aligned and the supplies for transit accounted for I needed to really mentally get psych’ed for this project because I do not typically paint in the daytime… or paint on a schedule… but the excitement to be part of this and to paint with fellow artist Ron Burns who is a pet painter/artist legend was pretty darn cool. Several reporters from several publications came to interview us, including The Milpitas Post and the Silicon Valley Newspapers.

Arrived to the new facility around10:30am and did not waste any time, I knew that these next three days were going to be a challenge. I had an idea of what I was going to create for these nine murals all on small modest pieces of note paper.

Having brought my trusty iPod and Bose iPod stereo, this is really the only support I have, I do not have a production staff that helps me prep or stage the artwork, only becasue I have a specific method of how I work. … I work best in a high volume fast paced environment and have to do each piece from start to finish. I have tried the production line style of creation, but this does not work for me, I feel I loose a lot of emotion when trying to do it this way.

So the first mural I created was one that I was truly excited about, it was the piece I titled “A Window to New Beginnings” .

The paintings that followed were a slight departure of what I do on canvas, I think because there were no limits, no parameters and the need for speed. Pieces included are “”Flowah Paw’ah”, “I’m on the Outside”, “Royal Rover”, “Daily Routine”, “Poodle Posies”, “Carrot Kingdom”, “Crazy Cosmic Cat” and my beloved “Lil Miss SAMi”, this piece is in the main socialization area of the habitats that I was responsible for. Averaging 3 murals per day was amazing.

Tons of emotional support, HSSV folks, Stephanie Ladeira, Christine Benniger and Laura Fulda stopped by a few times to check in to see the progress.

Ron and Buff Burns and their assistant Andrea met Mark and I for dinner after day one of intense painting, we were all pretty exhausted, but caught up for dinner in downtown Campbell. We met at our gallery and then off to Aquis Tex Mex. We took this fabulous photo of us at the gallery. I think we looked pretty good based on our exhaustion factor!

Two more full days of intense painting ahead. I give major kudos to my iPod and the selection of my favorite energetic tunes, from “Oingo Boingo”,”B52’s” to the array of hits of the 80’s and 90’s. Pumped the volume and proceeded to conquer this marathon. Ron, Buff and Andrea finished up late Thursday afternoon as they needed to depart back to Scottsdale, AZ for another obligation, so it was pretty quiet.

I was at the HSSV until late on Thursday, roughly 10:00pm finishing up and taking in this accomplishment. I was so tired, but satisfied to the degree of pleased on how this all turned out. In the days that followed, I was exhausted. My legs and arms were so sore from the ladder activity and my brain was fizzed out. It was a good kind of tired. Just to know that I could create something that would be a significant part of this new animal community was a rewarding feeling that I cannot even express. I get a tad misty when I reminisce about it.

This past weekend, the HSSV held its open house to the public. Mark and I were asked to come and showcase some of the pet related items that we create and to be present for the new murals. Itwas really wonderful to see what had been accomplished at the site just in the last 30 days - wow! There was a lot of press on this event, including The Mercury News that gave me a little mention on Sunday’s paper.

The overall support of the community, HSSV staff, volunteers was incredible. Thanks to everyone for their support and caring. It does make a difference. I feel so very proud.

My Darling Clementine ~ Orange ya Happy?

What do I wear today? For me it can be a challenge, especially for those of you who know me well will  attest to the fact that I am a fanatic for the easy essentials and ultimate comfort. Yup you guessed it… Adidas.  Mainly all the way around, the shoes, the pants, the flattering zip up the front jacket. Do I *have* to dress up today, who’s coming to the gallery, what have I got going on…? Do I really need to keep apologizing for my backroom-casual-everyday-is-casual-day-wardrobe?

This morning was different, I needed to get to the gallery pronto but felt the need to dress more than sweat attire. I grabbed the first top I could grab in the closet (that was clean), an orange sporty zip up top and usual black pants. Not having time to grab a quick bite, I snatch up a couple of these little “California Cuties“, little compact cute as heck oranges with the E-Z Peel skin that makes it very easy to eat on the go.

Stopping at the Home Depot to exchange something - I felt as though people looking at me like I was some sort of source of instant information… oh yes, the orange shirt, yeah, well, ok. .. I blend.  I quickly get my goods and dash out before getting bombarded with questions on caulking and sandpaper.

Driving into downtown Campbell, I see a few orange trees that are being pulled to the sidewalk by the clusters and clusters of oranges hanging on them, some have made an escape and have fallen to the ground. Darn, if I wasn’t in a such a hurry I would have pulled over and saved a few of those precious gems…

Orange ya Happy...?

I get into the gallery and it just sort of hit me that there is a theme happening here… some sort of citrus infused muse trying to tell me something.

Viola!

I immediately had our sales associate Andrew remove all of the front window display of the February themed *red* flavors and we were going to give this window a fresh facelift. It wasn’t hard to select a few paintings, watches, mini pop art and other orange infused artworks to make the window display look smashing!

It is the small things in life that I thrive on, the simple gesture of something  small and thoughtful. A small juicy fruit on the way to a hectic day can in some odd way, dictate how the day will unfold. Inspiration comes and goes like a flash, it truly unpredictable and never knowing when it will surface can truly be a treat… in more ways than one!  Now… orange *you* happy…?

Celebrating Jazzy Style

Celebrating Jazzy Style

Often times when I start a week I like to start it with a bang… this was very much the case for this week.  My best pal, Christine celebrated her husbands birthday party last Sunday here at the gallery. Now mind you these peeps  know how to throw a good party - many of them are jazz musicians and singers if that will tell you anything.

It was a fun celebration and with lots of  notoriously famed musicians and vocalists including Ms. Christine  (which was really cool for me to have these people in the gallery).  It was quite a celebrated event and everyone had a great time and I know Noel was ecstatic! (Next time we will bring the congas and I’ll sit in!)

As the week moved forward I worked on getting my email newsletter out (SPFA quarterly newsletter that tells folks about new arty products, exciting news and of course this time… the new blog announcement!). I always feel blessed on the amount of subscribers that have been followers for several years and who still follow….  I now associate the email addresses with the faces they belong to… Thanks y’all!

I think one of the benefits of being an artist in a local area is being able to give back to the community, I feel that my art is a gift and that when I can share it in some capacity, it’s pretty cool.  This past Tuesday, I had Boy Scout Pack #390 come for a field trip, it was one of those visits where they needed to talk and learn from a local artist, discuss some artwork and shared some of their own stories about art and what they like to do. I was really impressed with how many questions were asked from these nice youths and how aware they were on some of the terminology we discussed.

Now for those of you who know me pretty well, will know and appreciate that I did not sugar coat the business of the artworld, I did tell them that it was a lot of work and that I do much of the grunt work here at the gallery, from emails to framing to shipping… even the  janitorial stuff.  All jobs need to be completed in order to run a successful business of any kind. I am a true believe in good ole’ customer service and I am truly the fashionista of wearing many hats in the workplace.

I know that a large part of their trip to the gallery was so they can achieved a cool merit badge, I do hope they received their badge, I would certainly give them an great score!

So here comes a new week and new jazzy inspirations, you never know what can happen around here next!

Have we become modern day topiaries?

Much like the structure of life, there are things in the world that shape us and make is who we are. A topiary, for instance, a cultivated trimmed and primed manicured element of nature that from it’s botanical beginnings is intended to be a finely shaped piece of living visual artwork. The expectation of perfectness is forced, no compromise, it’s real, it’s planned.  It is intended.

Are you a topiary?

In life this too can be the case if you allow it, the pruning of new growth is stifling . You cannot be free when your ambitions are constantly clipped, tucked away, rearranged and confined.  I suspect that lifes pressures can force the way we think, look, feel and live.

Have we become modern day topiaries?

Be a wildflower

Why do we listen and believe everything we hear and see? Get out of that rut. Let the grass grow, let your hair down and kick up some spontaneous thrills and adventures. No more excuses, no whining, no gripping. Just do it.

There is much to say about the wildflowers that roam free, they grow as they will without barriers, no permission, no structure for them.  With this comes more beauty and down to earth charm.

My Simply Fearless Blog

Ok. so this is the perfect story on how networking really pays off! I was invited to a cool BizNik networking event in February here in downtown Campbell, it was raining and I really contemplated at the last minute, but since I do not like when people zone-out on my events there was no way I was going to stand up my friend Chrystal who was hosting it.

I attended the event and had some really inspiring encounters - I met many new faces of several new and innovating businesses. One business champion in particular was Cassandra Rae of Simply Fearless she is a blog and life coach.

Her name states it all.  Simply Fearless!

We connected (again by my pal Chrystal)  because the blog(s) that I had were outdated, unorganized and in dissaray. She was able to assist me in getting all this done in a very timely manner. She rocks!

We wrapped up the technical logistics in less than a week and I worked on the design elements all day yesterday. I started blogging today!

Thanks to Cassandra and to Chrystal for giving me the swift (but endearing) kick I needed!

Greetings!

Welcome to my new blog!

I’m so glad you are visiting because I am going to share with you what drives and inspires me and why I do what I do.  I will be documenting my adventures and experiences in life as well as sharing my thoughts, stories, dreams, and projects with other artists. I had a blog on MySpace, but I wanted to have a more personal presence that was easier to access… so my favorite writings from that are now posted here.

I welcome my family, friends, collectors, clients, colleagues and anyone who wants to know more about me and why I do what I do.  Please do leave comment when you visit and feel free to subscribe to keep up to date on what’s happening in my creative brain.  I’m all about connecting and I want to hear your thoughts and ideas too.

Cheers ~

I have had the awesome opportunity to work with fellow artist Ron Burns on the new HSSV facility murals (nine murals EACH to be exact) for the new dog habitat area in the new HSSV that’s scheduled to open by the end of March 2009.

The murals that I have created are posted in a new photo gallery titled “Humane Society Silicon Valley Philanthropy Mural Project”.(presently photos are only on Facebook).

I will capture more on this awesome experience (HSSV chronicles) soon over the next few days, but for now enjoy the new photos!
