International Artexpo, the country’s largest and most comprehensive fine arts show, and ART START, a New York City-based non-profit whose mission is to nurture the voices, hearts and minds of underserved children and teenagers, have come together to raise money for at-risk children through a benefit art sale. “We are thrilled to be working with ART START and the talented youth from the Hip Hop Project for our 2004 show,” says Joyce Jamison, show director. “ART START gives a voice to the underserved children of New York City and represents the best possible fruits of artistic expression.”

The ART START benefit sale will be located in the Crystal Palace at the entrance to the International Artexpo show floor. ArtBots, cutting-edge robotic artwork, will welcome attendees as they browse though the sale. In addition to the artwork donated by exhibitors and celebrities, ART START youth from the Art is Shelters Program also will have works on display and available for sale.

“Our youth find self-esteem through their artwork and are taught that they can make a difference in the world,” says Simon Fulford, ART START executive director. “We don’t impose ideas on the young participants in our programs. Instead, we listen to what they have to say and help them express these ideas in a positive way that teaches discipline and self-confidence. We are pleased that our youth’s artwork will be available for all Artexpo attendees to see and purchase at this benefit sale. It’s a great opportunity for our participants to reach a wider audience with their works and their cause.”

About Art Start Art Start is an arts-based youth development non-profit that profoundly impacts the lives of New York City’s underserved young people. Since 1991, Art Start has been providing free multi-disciplinary arts programs for the city’s homeless youth and teenagers living on the street or coming out of prison, as well as for young people simply struggling against economic brutality, devastated families, racism and a crumbling education system. Art Start believes that the arts have the capacity to allow young participants to rise above hardship by replacing frustration and instability with a sense of accomplishment, confidence and direction. As they have found over the past 12 years, art is the starting point of a process; the medium through which change takes place.
